Think about the last place you had professional photos taken.
It was probably in a shady park, or at the beach, or perhaps in a professional studio. The backdrop was perfectly suited to highlight your outfit selection and beautiful smile.
But what if I told you that a location doesn’t have to be perfect to create outstanding photos? What if I told you that beautiful pictures can happen anywhere–even in a location as unconventional as a Sonic parking lot?!
Last week, Hannah and I met up at Sonic to catch up. Hannah has recently launched her own makeup artist business, Hannah Hudson Make Up, and needed some headshots to create a more professional presence online. When she asked me if I could snap a few photos for her, I knew we didn’t need to go far to get the perfect shot. Nothing brings me more joy than encouraging fellow small business owners, except perhaps working with clients who have unwavering trust in my creative vision!
I looked around the parking lot for just the right swatch of filtered green sunlight and sky. Hannah was flexible and allowed me to position her just so under the wispy crepe myrtle branches. Getting creative with location is all about the angles!
Once we had a clean backdrop, we got to work. Hannah brought several of her make-up palettes and brushes, and we used these tools as props to highlight Hannah’s personality in addition to her brand focus.
I really loved the essence captured in this photo. Hannah’s fierce beauty and entrepreneurial dedication shine through!
This process got me thinking about how photographers can make the most of unconventional locations. It’s all a matter of perspective! Whether it's a parking lot, an industrial space, or a hidden gem in your own neighborhood, these locations have the potential to elevate your photography game with a unique charm. Here are some valuable tips for infusing the magic of unconventional locations into your photography:
One:
Location Scout: As you’re going about your day-to-day life, look for areas with pretty greenery, good light, or interesting textures–all it takes is a small nook with the right angles!
Two:
Consider the Seasons: Much like the changing seasons, your photo opportunities evolve as well. Don't dismiss a location during the winter months simply because it didn't work in summer; you might just stumble upon something entirely new!
Three:
Embrace Imperfections: Unconventional locations are going to have imperfections and quirks, but embrace these as part of the charm. Imperfections add character and authenticity to your photos.
